Fat Freddy’s Drop have just released their second album Dr. Boondigga & The Big BW and it’s stunning. Whatever you want to call it; soulful dub, reggae, electronic-jazz… it simply equates to a talented bunch of people making very listenable music.
Their last LP Based On A True Story sold by the bucket load when I was working back at Raouls (which sadly, is no more), but I never really got into it. This one though, is something else; Breakthrough at 8:49 could just keep on keeping on!
While they’ve played in Europe a bunch of times in the last few years and they are quite amazing live, you’ll have to be content with listening to this one on the headphones/speakers/ghetto blaster as they’ve cancelled their Euro ’09 tour.
the weekend of Wimbledon and Glastonbury. All we can talk about at the GF is the tennis and Glastonbury – and sadly, how we’re glad we’re not there.. too muddy, sorry. So after a morning of shopping at the Harvey Nichols sale, we settled in at home for a BBQ and the odd bit of couch commentary.
Flipping between the two channels, the question arose “are headbands ever appropriate?” The consensus was, after about 1 minute of debate, only if there was a genuine sporting need. Below, you will see an example of a headband being worn with a genuine sporting need, and one that is not.
While London has no shortage of clothing markets and vintage stores, this one gives me the impression that I might just find some quality goods. What’s even better is that it’s really close to my house and I can walk there, and there is a mention of food (a sure fire way to get me in the door…) AND if you visit their website you can save a whole three quid by signing up for freebie tickets to get in. whoa!

This recipe from Geoff Lawrance was featured in The Times magazine last weekend and I’m going to make it for a pot luck brunch tomorrow. Looks really really easy to make, and who doesn’t love apples and lemons… and then apples AND lemons put together?? Sometimes it’s the simple things that are the best.
Apple and lemon tart
Ingredients
250g Bramley apples
1 large lemon
1 large egg 75g granulated sugar
Sufficient short pastry to line a 20cm pie plate (about 250g)
10g butter
Method
1 Pre-heat oven to 190C/374F/gas 5.
2 Peel, core and coarsely grate or chop the apple. Add the juice and finely grated zest of the lemon, the beaten egg and the sugar. Mix thoroughly.
3 Line the pie plate with the pastry. Fill with the fruit mixture and dot with butter.
4 Bake for about 35 minutes until you can see that the filling is just beginning to caramelise.
5 Serve hot or cold with cream.
Ok, so, I made this and it was delicious!
I was going to be lazy and buy a premade flan case, but there weren’t any decent ones at my local supermarket so I made the pastry instead. I used this pastry recipe and I highly recommend it – it was easy to make and delicious. Don’t forget to blind bake it before adding the apple mix though!
